An Evening at Greyhaven with Chuck Pyle

As I write this Chuck Pyle is performing at the University of Utah in a concert sponsored by IAMA. In fact, it is probably intermission and he is in the foyer selling and signing CDs.

He arrived in town on Thursday afternoon, rented a Saturn, and drove to Greyhaven, where Kathleen and I had arrived an hour or so earlier. We awoke that morning at 2:45 a.m. MDT to catch an early flight from Boston to SLC; picked up our luggage; took the shuttle to the car lot; drove through the car wash; went directly to Costco; dropped our luggage at 1485; packed the Jeep with a plethora of items; stopped by Wendy's to augment the chile; stopped at the 7-Eleven for fireplace wood; opened the cabin; vacuumed the floor; fired up the pellet stove. And in walked Chuck Pyle.

We had a pleasant afternoon visiting with Chuck and his fiancee, Terri; sitting around the dining room table while Chuck pulled out his Martin and did a little warm-up; snacking on chile and chips; hearing stories about playing for Bill and Melinda Gates at their home on Lake Washington (it was their 10th anniversary).

About 6:30 people began drifting in, but the college age kids did not begin to appear in numbers until after 7:00 p.m. As it turned out, we started at 7:30 with Chuck coming down the stairs (he had been warming up his voice in the upstairs bathroom). I gave a very brief introduction, and he started in to "The Power of One" from his newest album.

The playlist:

The Power of One
Drifters Wind
Other Side of the Hill
Colorado
A Mystery to Me
Trying to Remember
Over the San Luis
Here Comes the Water
Yucki Sushi
Last Suit of Clothes
Affected by the Moon

Intermission

Step by Step
Horses on the Highway
Sounds of Rocky Pond
The Other Thing
True Unity
When I Found You
Cheap Little Ring
Two Trees
A Time to Decide / Endless Skies
Keeping Time by the River
Lay This Old Guitar Down (encore)

So, it may be the one thing we have in common with Bill and Melinda Gates: Chuck Pyle has done house concerts for both of us.

The show finished up about 10:00 and, after a pleasant visit, Kathleen and I left the cabin about 11:00 p.m. and were in bed by midnight.
